Refuge is at a new crossroad. Our executive director, Bill Current is stepping down and we need to determine if Refuge has the legs to continue. Started July 1, the gallery will be closed for 3-4 months, during that period we will determine if and how we can continue.
The not-for-profit gallery track is a difficult one, and the galley has survived by your generous donations, countless volunteer hours, the Illinois Arts Council, small corporate grants and Asylum Graphic Design. Asylum (Bill’s design company is relocating), and we can not support the whole space.
So we stand at a turning point, find a new executive director willing to forge ahead or close up shop. Continuing on would be the ideal, but first we need to find that leader. We encourage you to share your thoughts, or step up to create the next chapter of Refuge.
Otherwise, it has been a wonderful run. We created 12 exhibitions, 339 participating artists and over 2,000 people have attended Refuge events in our five year history. On behalf of the board of directors and executive director, we personally thank every single person who has participated and those who benefited from Refuge’s mission.
